On matters philosophical

I do a lot of thinking.  Generally, I believe it to be of a fairly high quality, but whether that is a correct impression is something I really have to leave to others to decide.  And that is the purpose of this web site, at least to some degree - people have the opportunity to give me feedback on whether what I have documented of my thinking process here has value.  They can also comment on sentences like that one, and ask for them to be re-phrased.

Philosophy is a bit of a strange beast in some ways.  There are those who would argue that it is of no value unless it has practical application.  Personally I believe that the act of 'doing the thinking' required to engage in philosophy is a practical application - it broadens the mind, hones the powers of argumentation and opens the mental windows for a breath of fresh air.

There are probably other who will claim that I am putting on airs and graces by describing my thinking as philosophy.  I don't mind that - it may not be, but philosophy is my tag for the higher level thinking I do in relation to my various subject areas of interest.

Whilst much of my thinking occurs behind my eyes, I do like to let the memes have some exercise occasionally, and I have to thank various correspondents such as Antonia, Dani and, of course, the inestimable Edwin, for their contributions to my ramblings.  As with all good things, whilst I would like to be able to lay complete claim to the ideas here, the chances are that they came about through dialogue and were refined the same way.

Mind  (these are just brief notes at the moment, due to an IT hiccup)

I discuss mind because my original use of the word consciousness seems to have left people more confused than they started, probably including me.  We have the famous Mind Body problem, which I have some thoughts on, but nothing earth shattering.

Learning

Learning, knowledge and education are subjects I will come to quite often on these pages

Reality

What is the nature of reality?  More to the point, what can we actually say about it?  I must remember to read some Kant, who I have been told has something to say on the matter.

Natural Machine Intelligence

Not just being awkward by renaming Artificial Intelligence (although that may also have something to do with it!) - I think there is a real difference in the two terms, and there is a natural bias which people get from the use of some words - even non-emotive ones.

With AI I often find I have to let the listener get over their mis-understanding of the acronym (this AI has nothing to do with sperm, no) before I can even get to discussing the nature of Artificial (man made) and Intelligence (I have some definitions, but the discussion won't fit in here...) - plus what I want to work on is intelligence which emerges naturally from the way machines interact, or natural machine intelligence (NMI) - watch this space for more (only don't expect it too soon)
