I do a lot of
thinking. Generally, I believe it to be of a fairly high quality,
but whether that is a correct impression is something I really have to
leave to others to decide. And that is the purpose of this web
site, at least to some degree - people have the opportunity to give
me feedback on whether what I have documented of my thinking process here
has value. They can also comment on sentences like that one, and
ask for them to be re-phrased.
Philosophy is a
bit of a strange beast in some ways. There are those who would
argue that it is of no value unless it has practical application.
Personally I believe that the act of 'doing the thinking' required to
engage in philosophy is
a practical application - it broadens the mind, hones the powers of
argumentation and opens the mental windows for a breath of fresh air.
There are probably
other who will claim that I am putting on airs and graces by describing
my thinking as philosophy. I don't mind that - it may not be, but
philosophy is my tag
for the higher level thinking I do in relation to my various subject
areas of interest.
Whilst much of my
thinking occurs behind my eyes, I do like to let the memes have some
exercise occasionally, and I have to thank various correspondents such as
Antonia, Dani and, of course, the inestimable Edwin, for their contributions
to my ramblings. As with all good things, whilst I would like to be
able to lay complete claim to the ideas here, the chances are that they
came about through dialogue and were refined the same way.
